#1: Fiddler on the Roof
The only movie I’ve seen anywhere near 19 times in theaters. I love this movie. The humanity, the passion, the music.
#2: Dr. Zhivago
It’s been a long time since I’ve since this, but I remember it vividly. I just learned that a new TV mini-series was done, so I’ll have to check it out.
Seven Samurai
Haven’t seen it? See it. Now.
Other movies in no particular order
Young Frankenstein
The Lord of the Rings (trilogy)
One year, I forget which, we watched all the LOTR movies (extended versions) back to back on New Years Day. Excellent! But you really want to read the books, don’t you?! Yes, you do! As great as the movies are, the books are much better.
Casablanca
“Play it again, Sam” is never uttered in this movie. It’s a great movie. If you haven’t seen it, please see it. You’ll thank me, I promise.
Die Hard – the series
Just plain fun. And the first one has a great role for the late, great Alan Rickman.
It’s a Wonderful Life
We watch it every Christmas and enjoy it every year.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Again, just plain fun.
The Princess Bride
Fantastic. I can even recommend Cary Elwes’s book about the movie.
Apollo 13
Love this movie featuring one of my absolute favorite actors, Gary Sinise.
Amadeus
The first time we watched it was on video tape. And we immediately rewound (remember having to do that?) and watched it again.
Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?
Love this movie. I’ll watch it any day.
The Fifth Element
A great movie featuring another favorite actor, Gary Oldman.
While You Were Sleeping
Part of our Christmas Movies list. We are big fans of Sandra Bullock.
Much Ado About Nothing
Great cast and, of course, great script.
Worst Movies
I’m not recommending you see these movies! Especially not the first one – once you’ve seen it, you can’t unsee it.
Battlefield Earth
A lot of bad movies can be watched for laughs. Not this one. John Travolta is horrible and the rest of the movie is almost as bad. Unbelievable. And it was a Great book! What a shame.
…and here is an explanation of what happened to make this such a horrible movie:
Wild Wild West
Will SMith, how could you do this to us? This is horrendous. It stinks.
Any of the Jason Bourne movies
I love the books, all of them. I’ve read them multiple times. Matt Damon cannot in his wildest dreams ever be Jason Bourne. Impossible. And the producers/directors took great books and made them mindless empty action flicks. Unforgivable.
Bourne Identity:
The Bourne Supremacy:
The Bourne Ultimatum:
I understand that there are other Jason Bourne movies out there with Matt Damon tragically miscast, but these were the only three Bourne novels written by Robert Ludlum. I tried reading the first Bourne novel by Eric Van Lustbader but found it lacking so I stopped reading it.
Give yourself a real treat – read the books!
